CSR: Corporate Social Responsibility

Voluntary role of business in contributing to a better society and a cleaner environment beyond its financial and capital commitments

DFE: Design for Environment

An engineering perspective in which the environmentally related characteristics of a product, process or facility are optimized

EPR: Extended Producer Responsibility

Movement which holds producers responsible for the disposal of waste; seeks to reduce waste disposal and relieve the burden of removing waste off of municipalities

FDA: Food and Drug Administration

Consumer protection agency with a mission to promote and protect the public health by helping safe and effective products reach the market in a timely way, monitor products for continued safety after they are in use, and to help the public get the accurate, science-based information needed to improve health

LCA: Life Cycle Analysis

The examination of everything that happens in the manufacture, use, and disposal of a product, from the time the raw materials are taken from the earth to the time the product is thrown away and is added to the ecosystem; the basic idea of LCA is to identify and evaluate all the environmental impacts of a given product

NGO: Non-Governmental Organization

Non-governmentally funded organizations with the goal to create a more peaceful, just, equitable and sustainable world for this and future generations

RPPC: Rigid Plastic Packaging Container Laws

Laws enacted as part of an effort to increase the use of recycled plastic and reduce the amount of plastic waste disposed in landfills

Sustainability:

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, or the health of the planet

Thermoforming:

A process in which a web or sheet of rigid thermoplastic is heated until soft. It is then shaped over or into a mold using a suitable combination of vacuum, blow pressure and a mechanical plug or ring assist. Once cooled the thermoformed part is trimmed from the web with die or punch press

Materials:

HDPE: High Density Polyethylene

Plastic used in the manufacturing of items such as plastic pipe, grocery bags, water coolers and milk bottles

PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate

Type of thermoplastic polyester and a leading recyclable plastic material

PLA: Polylactide

A polymer produced from the natural starches found in corn developed by NatureWorks LLC.
